In a world that teaches us to share our lives in front of thousands of strangers, it is very competitive and more difficult than ever to stand out in the crowded world of social media.
In today’s world of technology and innovation, how we brand ourselves has become a huge part of how successful we are. From obtaining jobs, business partnerships and building online relationships, long gone are the days when all you had to do was earn with a business degree or write a stellar resume.
Today you have to understand that YOU are a brand and you are living this brand each and every day. Resumes require keywords and employers have teams of people who research you via Google to get an idea of who you are and what you are doing. You may not realize it, but potential business partners are researching you online as well. If you have a LinkedIn profile you have the option of seeing everyone who views your page. You would be surprised at some of the people who will check you out after having a short conversation with you at the local Starbucks.
Personal & Professional Branding and how using Technology can help.
Social media awareness is crucial to brand development. Learn which platform connects you to your target audience. (Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)
Postings on any social media are forever (there are no do-overs). Everything you post, respond to or react to is for the entire world to see.
When I refer to you being a “brand” what I mean is that you are the perception you put out into the world.
A Champion’s Personal Brand:
1. Is Authentic
In a world where anyone can create a fake perception of themselves via social media; it is more important than ever to be authentic. People will eventually sense if the image you are projecting is who you really are. You can only “fake it till you make it” for a short time before the word gets out that you are not who you claim to be. So why not start off on the right foot from the beginning? You will earn more loyal followers, great partnerships, and genuine connections that will help support your brand vision.
2. Is Clearly defined
How likely are you to patronize a business in which you don’t have a clear understanding of what they do? Let me guess, “not likely at all!” This is one of the main reasons it is vital that you focus on one thing and become an expert at it. I call it, “being a student of the game.” Adding your authenticity and a profound focus to your craft will induce your joy, passion, connection to others and your success. Your social media personality should be clearly defined for your audience.
3. Tells YOUR story
Everyone has a story and many times we don’t appreciate the value of our story. There has been a time in every one of our lives that we have struggled in some area that we had to overcome. People want to connect to others whom they believe understand struggles or who can help them solve their problems. A problem you encounter is possibly a problem someone else encountered. We are more alike than we are different. That being said, your story of overcoming can help inspire someone beyond his or her circumstances. It can help connect you to others who will believe in and support you. Your story holds Value… So, tell it. Share it. Embrace it.
4. Connects with emotions
Again, this goes back to telling your story. Your career choice is connected to a story and that story is connected to your “WHY.” Your audience wants to know the story of your WHY. Why are you so passionate about your work? Why should they listen to you? Why should they hire you? Why do you want to help solve this problem? What's your why and what's the story behind it?
5. Has a consistent message
Ever been in a conversation where the other person is all over the place and you can’t keep up? I have and it is the worst! Eventually, I just unconsciously start to tune the other person out. If your audience can’t follow along with your message, then more likely than not, they will tune you out. Your message must be defined and easily understood by those you are trying to engage. What experience are you hoping to provide for them? What are the takeaways? What problem are you helping them to solve? Who is benefitting from your message? What value are you adding? These are pertinent questions to answer in your message.
All in all, your online success will depend on how well you brand yourself. This is not a simple process and it will take time, patience and hard work to create a Champion's Brand. As we all know, nothing of excellent quality is created overnight. Once equipped with the knowledge; execution and focus must take place. I believe in you. Now get out there and build your brand empire!
